AUXERRE`S highly-rated defender Phillipe Mexes has admitted that he would love to play for Roma.

The player has attracted interest from a host of the continent`s top teams, including Manchester United, Juventus and Roma, with the Italian capital club jumping to the head of the queue.

In December, the Roman club sent scouts to watch Mexes in a Championnat clash with Corsican side Bastia, and it appears that they were suitably impressed to approach Auxerre about a deal.

Mexes spoke of the interest in him, saying: "Roma and Juventus targeted me and I would like to play at the Stadio Olimpico."

Mexes is contracted to Auxerre until 2003 and he is unsure when he will be able to move.

"I don't know when I could play in Serie A," Mexes added. "I have a deal with Auxerre for the moment.

"I feel good with Auxerre, but I know I could never play a Champions League match until I move from Auxerre."

Meanwhile Giallorossi star Aldair talked about Roma's season, commenting: "I think it is too early to talk about Scudetto.

"I feel that the month of February is set to be important for us because we will have to play a lot of matches; we will have to manage that moment."
