Paulo Bento believes Ricardo Carvalho owes Portuguese football fans an explanation for his abrupt retirement from the international game.
The Real Madrid defender stormed out on the Portugal squad when it was revealed he would not be starting their game against Cyprus last month.
Bento led his side to a 4-0 away victory and Carvalho announced his international retirement the following day, claiming to have been "disrespected."
"I am not responsible in this subject," said Bento, who feels the 33-year-old needs to provide a better explanation for the bitter end.
"Carvalho has closed the door on the Portugal squad and the minimum the player needs to do is offer an explanation to the fans, but I still don't know that their reaction will be."
The former Chelsea defender played for his country on 75 occasions, scoring four times.
