MONACO have been dealt a further blow following the injury to Philippe Christanval, with the news that Eric Abidal has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Christanval had to pull out of France`s squad for the friendly with Germany due to a leg injury, but the problem facing Abidal is far worse.

It is debatable as to whether he will be able to return next season, after tests showed that he had fractured his right knee cap.

Abidal had been dogged by a knee problem for around a month, but broke down with a painful injury at the end of last week.

Following a thorough examination it was diagnosed that the 21-year-old defender had suffered a serious fracture and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Francisco Da Costa has also suffered an injury to his knee, and he could be sidelined for around a week.
