Arsenal are reported to have made contact with Le Mans about Mathieu Coutadeur.
The Gunners have been watching the highly-rated Coutadeur for a number of months, but they are not the only club taking a keen interest in the 22-year-old.
German outfits Wolfsburg, Stuttgart and Hoffenheim are known to be keen on the holding midfielder.
Coutadeur is currently contracted to the club until 2010, but it is reported in France that he has a verbal agreement that he will be allowed to leave this summer.
Now Arsenal, who are also believed to be keen on his team-mate Gervinho, could be ready to step up their interest.
Coutadeur recently admitted he was considering his options.
"I will have one year left on my contract at the end of the season," he said.
"Since I am tied to the club until 2010.
"For me, the ball is in the club's court. I am ambitious. I want to progress.
"We will consider all this at the end of the season."
