Radamel Falcao's 45th-minute goal gave Monaco their first win of the Ligue 1 season as they defeated Nantes 1-0 on Sunday night.

The Colombia striker headed in Layvin Kurzawa's cross from close range at the Stade de la Beaujoire to register the first points for his side following defeats by Lorient and Bordeaux.

The result still leaves big-spending Monaco firmly in the bottom half of the table, just one place above the bottom three at this early stage of the season.

Lens picked up their first win of the new season with a 1-0 success at Lyon.

Lalaina Nomenjanahary scored the only goal for Antoine Kombouare's side 11 minutes in and it was comfortable for them after that, short of a late flourish from Lyon which could not bring about an equaliser.

Saint-Etienne missed the chance to join Bordeaux at the top of the early Ligue 1 standings as a missed penalty proved costly in a 0-0 stalemate against Rennes.

Moments after Rennes' Pedro Henrique struck a post, Saint-Etienne looked poised to take full advantage when Mevlut Erding won a 40th-minute penalty, but he saw his shot saved by Benoit Costil.

Saint-Etienne continued to push in the second half but created only a handful of chances and Rennes held out for a point.
