Bundesliga outfit Hamburg came from two goals behind to claim a 2-2 draw against FC Thun in their InterToto Cup third round first leg.
Swiss side Thun started well and took the lead just before the half hour mark through former Basel star Antonio Dos Santos.
Mario Raimondi then doubled their lead just minutes later from the penalty spot.
Argentinian striker Bernardo Romeo gave his side some real hope when he scored just five minutes into the second period.
Just five minutes from time Hamburg completed their comeback when midfielder Bastian Reinhardt struck.
The Germans will now be favourites to progress into the semi-finals.
Schalke kicked off their season in fine style with a 5-0 success over Vardar Skopje at The Arena AufSchalke.
Defender Mladen Kristajic marked his debut with the opener after 19 minutes and then Turkish starlet Hamit Altintop made it 2-0 just before the interval.
Brazilian Ailton then also grabbed a debut goal (49), before Thomas Klasener (81) and an own goal from Darko Tasevski (90) completed the scoring.

Lille secured a less than comfortable 2-1 success over Belarus side Dinamo Minsk at Stade Grimonprez-Jooris.
All the goals came in a frantic six-minute period in the first half.
Nicolas Plestan opened the scoring for Lille after 23 minutes, before Leonid Kovel levelled three minutes later.
Matt Moussilou secured victory on 29 minutes but Lille know they still have a battle on their hands in the second leg.
Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are well placed to make the semi-finals after a 4-2 success in Czech Republic over FC Zlin.
Alvaro Novo put Atletico ahead after just two minutes and they kept the lead until just after half time when Jaroslav Svach levelled.
Serbian striker Veljko Paunovic then hit the first of two goals as he put the Spaniards ahead on 71 minutes.
Kiki Musampa made it three (82), before Paunovic added a fourth not long after.
Svach also grabbed a brace as he pounced a few minutes from time, to give Zlin a slim ray of hope going into the second leg.
German giants Borussia Dortmund took a step towards the Uefa Cup with a 1-0 success at Racing Genk.
The only goal of the game came from young striker David Odonkor just before half time.
Last season's Uefa Cup semi-finalists Villarreal earned a 1-0 home win over Russian Spartak Moscow.
