Rothen close to Monaco switch

TROYES defender Jerome Rothen now looks set to join Monaco after his move to Nantes fell through at the last minute.

Rothen was set to discuss personal terms with Le Championnat champions when the clubs failed to agree a fee, but Monaco chairman Jean-Louis Campora has come in with a suitable offer of around ‚é¼4.4 million.

Troyes seem certain to accept this bid, although the deal also involves Monaoc's Nicolas Bonnal moving in the opposite direction and there are still doubts over his fitness after a serious knee injury.

The 25-year-old admits that Monaco coach Didi Deschamps has told him he wants Rothen, and that his own departure from the Stade Louis II depends on him agreeing personal terms with Troyes.

"My departure depends on me," said Bonnal. "My coach has explained to me that he wants Rothen.

"I am involved in the deal, but if I refuse, my coach will not hold it against me.

"I will think about, even if I am interested by Troyes and I have a good relationship with Alain Perrin. I haven't forgotten that my officials kept me here when Marseille and Galatasaray wanted me. Suddenly they changed their minds."

Rothen seems convinced it will happen, and is looking forward to moving to the Principality.

"I'm delighted with this transfer," said Rothen. "I believe Monaco are still a great team and my meeting with Didier Deschamps convinced me to sign for Monaco."
