Greek giants fail in loan bid for midfielder

Skysports.com understands Aston Villa have rejected a loan offer from Olympiakos for Jean Makoun. Makoun, after being brought in by Gerard Houllier, does not appear to figure in Alex McLeish's long-term plans. The 28-year-old, who joined Villa last January from Lyon, has been an unused substitute in Villa's opening two Premier League games and has made just seven appearances since arriving at Villa Park. The news has alerted Greek giants Olympiakos, who are keen to bring in the Cameroon international as they look to bolster their squad ahead of another UEFA Champions League campaign. However, Villa are believed to have rebuffed their initial approach to take the midfielder on a season-long loan. Makoun is understood to be keen to have clarity about his future at Villa, as he would consider a move in search of regular first-team action Sources close to Makoun said; "Jean is flattered by Olympiakos' interest and if he does not figure in Villa's plan he would consider a move and the chance to play in the Champions League."
