Rennes' Alexander Frei is determined not to let injury ruin his World Cup dream.

The Swiss star is poised to undergo a groin operation next week but the player hopes to make a quick return in time for his country's World Cup campaign which kicks off in June.

And despite doctors putting a three-month time scale on his recovery, the 26-year-old believes he will be back sooner rather than later.

"Doctors say that I'll be out for up to 12 weeks but things are never the way they say," said Frei.

"We will wait and see how things are after the surgery. But what is certain is that I'll try to come back as soon as possible.

"I hope this won't prevent me from taking part in the World Cup. I have tried to make the best choice for my health and for my career."
