Rennes expect Alexander Frei to play for the club again, despite the striker undergoing possible season-ending surgery.
Frei is set to leave the club in the summer and the French side's fans fear that they have seen the last of the Swiss international.
However, chairman Pierre Dreossi hopes the player will be back in a Rennes shirt before the season is over.
"We have studied a lot of options and talked to a lot of doctors," confirmed Dreossi.
"Alex has chosen to be operated on now but I hope he will be back playing again before the summer."
Frei himself has no idea as to when he will return but is fearful of going under the knife.
"I have seen a lot of specialists and I haven't made a decision about the World Cup," said Frei.
"The operation was necessary for my career and I want to play as soon as possible.
"I have only missed three matches in my nine-year career and this is the first time I will be operated on. Frankly, I am scared.
"It's not natural to be asleep for two hours while someone opens your body."
