France appear set to be without Yann M'Vila and Blaise Matuidi for their Euro 2012 opener against England on 11th June.
Laurent Blanc's side enter this summer's European Championship in fine form and had been hoping to establish early momentum in their quest to land the continental crown.
There is, however, a good chance that they will line-up against the Three Lions without two key midfielders.
M'Vila picked up an ankle knock during the first minute of France's 2-0 friendly win over Serbia on Thursday.
It was feared that he would be forced to miss the entire tournament as a result, but scans have helped to keep his Euro dream alive.
Sprain
A statement from the French Football Federation (FFF) said: "The MRI confirmed that it's a moderately serious sprain, without aggravating factors.
"It's running its course, there are no complications."
Matuidi is also highly unlikely to face England, meaning Yohan Cabaye and Alou Diarra will battle it out for a starting berth.
An MRI scan on Matuidi has revealed that he has suffered 'a minor tear to his right hamstring'.
There is better news on the goalkeeping front, though, with the FFF announcing that Steve Mandanda, who has been nursing a toe complaint, is ready to play if required.
