On-loan Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse continued to impress for Marseille by scoring in a 2-0 win over Rennes on Sunday.
L'OM, celebrating their 2,000th top-flight game, moved into third place in Ligue 1 courtesy of the victory.
After Rennes had Stephane M'Bia Etoundi dismissed after 42 minutes, Cisse raced through on goal to put the visitors ahead (58).
However l'OM had to wait until injury time to seal the win when Toifilou Maoulida claimed a second.
St Etienne passed up the chance to steal a march on Marseille and take third place for themselves as they crashed to a 1-0 defeat at home to struggling Monaco.
The Saints had Lille and Sochaux in their sights before kick-off, but a fourth successive defeat in all competitions leaves them in sixth place after 20 games.
Czech Republic international Jan Koller was the match-winner for the Principality as he headed home from Camel Meriem's cross after 66 minutes.
Monaco remain in 15th place but following Koller's header have now opened up a six-point gap on the relegation places.
