Marseille have cancelled the contract of injury-prone defender Philippe Christanval.

The 26-year-old has struggled to establish himself at Stade Velodrome since ending a miserable two-year spell at Barcelona in 2003.

He featured sporadically during his debut season on the South Coast of France but failed to make an appearance in Ligue 1 last term.

New coach Jean Fernandez has quickly decided the France international does not figure in his plans and has sanctioned his departure.

Christanval concurred on a deal with l'OM to rip up the final two years of his contract to enable him to leave the club on a free transfer.

The centre half will now look to revive a stagnant career which had previously seen him destined for the top after shining for Monaco from an early age.
