Serie A Round-Up

Brescia were relegated whilst Parma and Bologna will contest a survival play-off.

In a dramatic final day of Serie A action Brescia were relegated whilst Parma and Bologna will contest a play-off to determine who will join them and Atalanta in Serie B next season.

The situation was determined by Siena as they jumped out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over bottom side Atalanta, whilst Fiorentina pulled off a superb win to escape trouble themselves - despie finishing equal on points with Parma and Bologna.

Siena took the lead through Enrico Chiesa before Igor Budan levelled for Atalanta, although Stefano Argilli became an instant hero with just ten minutes to go as he scored to save the Tuscan side's Serie A status.

Parma's agonising season in the wake of financial difficulties will be prolonged even further as they could not guarantee themselves safety with an exciting 3-3 draw with Lecce.

Domenico Morfeo put Gialloblu ahead after 20 minutes, although Pietro Carmignani's side conceded twice to lose their advantage as Alex Pinardi and Mirko Vucinic netted for the home side.

Mark Bresciano restored parity soon after, before Sam Dalla Bona and the prolific Alberto Gilardino exchanged strikes early in the second half to set up a nervous remainder of the game.

Matteo Contini and Morfeo saw red in the last five minutes for Parma, who will have to wait even longer to see whether they will suffer the humiliation of relegation.

They will face Bologna in a showdown play-off fixture after they failed to break the deadlock in a 0-0 draw with Sampdoria.

The result also had consequences for the higher end of the table, as Samp were unable to catch Udinese for the lucrative UEFA Champions League spot in fourth.

Fiorentina survive by virtue of having a better head-to-head record against Parma and Bologna, and relegated Brescia as they triumphed 3-0 at home.

Fabrizio Miccoli scored a penalty before Martin Jorgensen and Cristian Rigano put the tie beyond doubt - whilst a disappointing campaign for Brescia was capped when Omar Milanetto was dismissed with two minutes to go.

At the other end of the table Udinese clinched their place in Europe's elite for next season with a 1-1 draw against Champions League losers Milan.

David Di Michele opened the scoring after 56 minutes, although The Rossoneri salvaged some pride thanks to Serginho as the Brazilian scored with five minutes to go.

After having sewn up the Scudetto Juventus ended their campaign with a fine 4-2 win over Cagliari.

However, the match was particularly notable for the return to professional football of Adrian Mutu as he came on as a second half substitute, after the Romanian striker sustained a seven-month ban for drug abuse and was sacked by Chelsea.

The Serie A champions never looked in trouble and raced into a three goal lead thanks to Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Stephen Appiah.

Trezeguet added a second in between a brace from Gianfranco Zola - in what could be the popular striker's last game before retirement.

Internazionale finished the campaign in typical fashion as they played out a 0-0 draw with Reggina.

The Nerazzurri had already secured third place in a campaign that included a remarkable 18 draws and just two defeats.

Chievo avoided being drawn into the extensive permeations surrounding the Italian relegation battle as their 0-0 draw with Roma saw them finish one point ahead of the drop zone.

The draw also saw Roma finish in eighth in Bruno Conti's last game in charge before he reverts back to his youth role at Stadio Olimpico - although The Giallorossi still qualify for Uefa Cup football by virtue of their place in the Coppa Italia final.

Palermo will also compete in Europe's second string competition, although their participation was already set in stone before their 3-3 draw with Lazio.

Luca Toni edged the home side into an early lead after just two minutes before Tommaso Rocchi hit back for the Rome side.

Franco Brienza and Toni again had looked to have secured the three points in Sicily, although Fabio Bazzani and Roberto Muzzi struck in the last twenty minutes to restore parity.

Neither Messina nor Livorno had outstanding issues to settle before the start of play, and their game finished a 1-1 stalemate as Cristiano Lucarelli finished as Serie A top scorer for Livorno as he pegged back Riccardo Zampagna's goal.
