Marseille's hopes of securing UEFA Champions League football took a knock as they went down to a thrilling 4-3 defeat at Rennes on Sunday.

Switzerland international Alexander Frei was the hero for the home side as his amazing four-goal blast was enough to sink l'OM.

Former Rennes man Laurent Batlles scored against his old side after half an hour, but Frei struck the first of his haul five minutes later for 1-1.

Frei then put Rennes ahead on 38 minutes before prolific striker Didier Drogba scored his 18th goal for Marseille to send the sides in level at half time.

Frei notched a superb hat-trick with a brilliant third past Fabien Barthez on the hour, but that was then cancelled out by Egyptian striker Mido's goal on 72 minutes and a thrilling encounter was level again at 3-3.

The crowd did not have to wait long for a seventh goal and it came for the hosts courtesy of Frei's fourth goal to seal the three points for Rennes.

The win eases any niggling relegation fears for Rennes while Marseille remain a disappointing sixth place in the table.
