Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has received a welcome boost ahead of Saturday's clash with Sunderland.

Vignal, Queudrue and Parnaby should be back in contention

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish has received a welcome boost to his defensive options ahead of Saturday's clash with Sunderland. Gregory Vignal, Franck Queudrue and Stuart Parnaby should all come back into contention for the game at St Andrews. The news is a major boost for McLeish, who has suffered injury worries in recent weeks, particularly with his back four, as he attempts to get back to winning ways following last weekend's 3-1 reverse at Arsenal. The Birmingham boss told the club's official website: "Gregory Vignal is at a good level and could be back. "He might join us this week which would indicate that he could be available for the weekend. "Franck (Queudrue) is back in training and so is Stuart Parnaby.

Horrendous

"It's good that Stuart is back because the full-back situation has been horrendous. "I wasn't too unhappy with the defence last week, although there were a couple of things they could have done better, but we were playing against a top draw side." On a less positive note, Keith Fahey (ankle) is a major doubt for Saturday and McLeish will definitely be without the services of David Murphy (knee), Giovanny Espinoza (ankle) and Martin Taylor (ankle). Finnish international Teemu Tainio is also ineligible to play against his parent club. McLeish added: "Tainio is out because of the ruling over loan players and Fahey is still fighting to be ready but he is a doubt. "Tiny (Martin Taylor) is still out for a while and Espinoza took a bump in South America. "Christian (Benitez) is fine and Garry O'Connor is fine and he scored a couple of goals in a run out for the reserves yesterday in a bounce game."
