Last season's second-placed side Bordeaux matched Lyon's win in the first round of fixtures in Ligue 1, whilst Valenciennes earned a creditable draw with Auxerre in their first top flight game for 13 years.
Coach Ricardo's Bordeaux side claimed a 2-0 win at home to Toulouse, with Marouane Chamakh opening the scoring after 57 minutes.
Faubert then added a second with two minutes to go as his side responded to Lyon's 3-1 win over Nantes on Friday night.
Monaco's season started in disappointing fashion with a 1-0 defeat to Nancy.
The Principality fell to a 55th minute goal from Moncef Zerka, whilst striker David Gigliotti saw red for two bookable offences.
Paris Saint Germain also suffered defeat as they lost in a five goal thriller to promoted side Lorient.
The Parc des Princes crowd saw a familiar face return to haunt them as former PSG winger Fabrice Fiorese (32, 53) twice cancelled out strikes from Pierre-Alain Frau (29) and Fabrice Pancrate (45).
Rafik Saifi then condemned the capital club to an embarrassing loss as he scored with 14 minutes to go.
Lille, who finished third last season, fared better in a 2-1 win over Rennes.
Mathieu Bodmer (10) and Abdul Keita (42) ensured they claimed all three points, but Rennes scored a consolation through an Olivier Monterrubio penalty just before the hour mark.
Promoted Valenciennes did well to earn a 1-1 draw at ten-men Auxerre in their first appearance in the top flight since their enforced demotion due to a match-fixing.
The visitors even took the lead through Steve Savidan (43) before Auxerre equalised through Jean-Pascal Mignot (50), and the hosts ended the game a man short when Johan Radet received a second yellow card with two minutes to go.
A Jerome Leroy brace ensured Sochaux came away with all three points at Stade Geoffrey-Guichard as they beat St Etienne 2-1.
The midfielder scored after 22 and 74 minutes, rendering Frederic Piquionne's 17th minute opener useless.
Ivorian striker Aruna Dindane showed he was not suffering from a World Cup hangover as his solitary goal gave Lens a 1-0 victory over Troyes.
Le Mans also prevailed by the same result as Grafite's early goal handed them a win at home to Nice.
