Lille missed the chance to close on Lyon after a 3-1 defeat at struggling Bastia.

The visitors made the ideal start with the opener from Mathieu Debuchy after just 18 minutes, but two goals in three minutes from Youssouf Hadji (26) and Stephane Ziani (29) turned the game on its head for the Corsicans.

Romain Rocchi wrapped up the win for Bastia with a third goal five minutes before the break.

Auxerre lost further ground on the leading pack following a 3-1 loss at Lens.

Olivier Thomert gave Lens a flying start with the opening goal in the very first minute.

John Utaka put the game beyond Auxerre with two late goals (76, 83) and although Arnaud Gonzalez pulled a goal back for Auxerre two minutes from time, it was nothing more than a consolation for the visitors.

Bordeaux piled the misery on bottom of the table Istres with a 1-0 win at the basement outfit.

Kalu Uche netted the only goal of the game for Bordeaux ten minutes from time.

Monaco warmed up for next week's UEFA Champions League showdown with PSV Eindhoven with a disappointing goalless draw with Metz at Stade Louis II.

Paris Saint Germain bounced back from their French Cup exit in midweek with a narrow 1-0 win over Nantes at Parc Des Princes.

Portuguese star Pedro Pauleta grabbed the all-important winning goal for PSG two minutes from time to give them a much-needed three points.

Rennes boosted their European hopes with a 3-0 win over nine-man Sochaux.

Swiss ace Alexander Frei broke the deadlock after just four minutes and Swedish international Kim Kallstrom doubled the lead on 13 minutes.

Both sides were reduced to ten men on 65 minutes, with Jeremy Menez seeing red for Sochaux for foul and abusive language and Cyril Jeunechamp dismissed for Rennes for violent conduct.

Sochaux were reduced to nine men when Omar Daf was sent off for a second bookable offence on 71 minutes.

Rennes added to Sochaux's misery with a third in the final minute from Frei.

Strasbourg climbed further away from trouble at the wrong end of the table with a precious 1-0 win over Ajaccio.

Jean-Christophe Devaux hit the winner for Strasbourg on 35 minutes and things got worse for Ajaccio when Nenad Dzodic was sent off 14 minutes from time.

Toulouse kept their European bid on track with a 1-0 victory over Nice.

Daniel Moreira scored the crucial winning goal on 36 minutes for Toulouse.
