A last minute penalty from Mohamed Kallon lifted Monaco to the summit of Ligue 1.

For long spells, it looked as if Nantes would frustrated Didier Deschamps' men, but they dug in and reaped the rewards.

Florin Bratu had given Les Canaris the lead, but Pontus Farnerud hauled Monaco level just after the break.

Monaco pressed forward for the winner and their endeavour was rewarded with a late penalty which was tucked home by Kallon.

Auxerre and Bastia both missed the chance to close in on the leaders as they suffered defeats.

Nicolas Martin netted twice for St Etienne, as Les Verts proved too strong for Auxerre.

Lyon now have the only unbeaten record in the French top flight, as Bastia were thumped at home by Bordeaux.

Bastia took the lead early on through Frederic Nee, but Les Girondins took control before the interval thanks to a brace from Lilian Laslandes and an effort from Julien Faubert. Maromane Chamakh put some gloss on the scoreline with a late fourth.

An Alexander Frei header handed Rennes a 1-0 win over Marseille.

Swiss striker Frei has been in fine form this term and his goal on 57 minutes condemned Marseille to defeat.

Frei rose highest to meet an Olivier Monterrubio corner and head the ball past Fabien Barthez for his fifth goal of the campaign.

L'OM chased the game in the final 25 minutes, with Steve Marlet going close on a couple of occasions, but they found Andreas Isaksson in superb form.

Marlet's efforts in the second half were an attempt to make up for his penalty miss in the 14th minute, when Isaksson pushed away his effort from 12 yards.

Paris Saint Germain continue to struggle and they let two points slip away at Lens, as they threw away a two-goal lead.

Lorik Cana and Fabrice Pancrate had PSG in command, but Lens battled back and two goals the final eight minutes by Jacek Bak and Da Hilton stunned the capital club.

Ajaccio climbed off the foot of the table with a 1-0 win at Istres - Cyril Chapuis their scorer.

Philippe Brunel found the scoresheet in Lille's win at Sochaux while Strasbourg took a point from their trip to Caen.

Jose Cobos' last minute effort helped Nice take a point from their trip to Metz, who had led through Herve Tum.
