MONTPELLIER have been rocked by the news that Sebastien Michalowski's horror tackle on Adama Coulibaly has been punished with a hefty two-month ban.

Michalowski's terrible foul on Lens defender Coulibaly left the Malian player with a broken ankle that will keep him out for a year, and the French authorities have come down hard on the aggressor.

The disciplinary committee's chairman Mr Riolacci insisted that, although they did not think there was any deliberate desire to injure Coulibaly - the seriousness of the injury meant they had to act.

"It was a rough and dangerous tackle," said Riolacci. "We do not consider that there was any intent to cause an injury.

"However, the consequences of this violent gesture meant that we felt we had to act."

The Montpellier star insisted that the moment was not premeditated, and was not a normal part of his game.

"It was an accident," insisted Michalowski. "There was no intent.

"This was completely out of character for me.

"I didn't even know how bad the injury was at the time - only afterwards."
