Friday's action in Ligue 1 saw Lyon came unstuck on home soil and defending champions Lille draw a blank.
Rennes climbed above fourth-placed Lyon in the standings after claiming a 2-1 comeback win over Remi Garde's misfiring side.
The hosts went ahead on 36 minutes, with Kim Kallstrom picking up a half-cleared corner before firing in a shot that Ederson helped into the top corner of the net.
Lyon's joy was short-lived, though, as Rennes equalised just three minutes later through Jonathan Pitroipa, who beat home defender Bakary Kone to the ball before slotting past Hugo Lloris.
That was a blow to Lyon but they almost regained the lead within a minute when Anthony Reveillere pounced on a poor clearance before thumping in a left-footed shot that crashed against the post.
Rennes may have considered themselves fortunate to have been on level terms at the break, but they enjoyed a much better second half and needed just eight minutes to get themselves in front.
Kallstrom lost possession to Yann M'Vila, who quickly freed Jires Ekoko and the 23-year-old sped away before firing past Lloris.

Reigning champions Lille came through a credential-examining clash at Toulouse with a 0-0 draw that extends their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 games, but it could have been so much better.
A missed penalty by Moussa Sow robbed Rudi Garcia's men of the chance to return home with a three-point haul that would have moved them to within a win of leaders Paris St Germain.
As it is, though, they could now be eight points behind PSG come the end of the weekend.
That said, any result other than a defeat at Stadium Municipal is generally considered to be a good one, and, with Toulouse sitting in the top six and hitting the woodwork through Franck Tabanou, Lille could still be relatively happy with their efforts.
