Lyon suffered a second consecutive Ligue 1 defeat after losing 2-1 at home to Bordeaux, while second-placed Lens were also beaten.
Following on from the recent 2-0 reverse at Toulouse, champions Lyon failed to respond in the expected manner after slipping up at Stade Gerland.
Bordeaux took the lead after just three minutes through Juan Francia's penalty and Johan Micoud scored a second goal on 27 minutes.
Milan Baros came on for his Lyon debut in the second half, and though Fred pulled a goal back on 64 minutes, Gerard Houllier's side could not stave off defeat.
Nearest pursuers Lens failed to take advantage, though, as Rafik Saifi's 50th minute goal earned Lorient a 1-0 home win, with the visitors having Nenad Kovacevic sent off on 25 minutes.
Franck Ribery scored twice as Marseille recorded a 3-1 victory over Auxerre at a deserted Stade Velodrome to move level on points with Lens.
Marseille had been forced to play the match behind closed doors after a supporter threw a firebomb during a game at Nice earlier in the season which hurt a fireman.
The lack of atmosphere did not affect l'OM in the early stages as Ribery struck just eight minutes into the game.
Auxerre's Polish striker Ireneusz Jelen levelled things up on 17 minutes before Ribery scored his second of the match on 38 minutes.
Nigerian full-back Taye Taiwo snuffed out Auxerre's hopes of a comeback by making it 3-1 with a free-kick on 88 minutes.
Paul Le Guen suffered his first defeat as Paris Saint Germain coach after seeing his side go down 1-0 at Lille.
Powerful midfielder Jean Makoun scored the only goal of the game on 76 minutes to keep Lille in the hunt for UEFA Champions League football.
Bottom club Sedan earned an excellent 1-1 draw at high-flying Sochaux, who snatched a point on 63 minutes through Alvaro dos Santos after Joseph-Desire Job had scored in the first period.
Second-half goals from Jimmy Briand (49) and Etienne Didot (79) claimed a 2-0 win for Rennes at Monaco.
Johan Elmander's 23rd minute effort was enough to clinch a 1-0 victory for Toulouse at Nice.
Gael Sanz netted an 88th minute winner for Troyes at home to Nantes, with both teams having played most of the match with 10 men.
Troyes had Gharib Amzine dismissed after just 19 minutes and he was followed for an early bath just six minutes later by Nantes' Julio Rossi.
Substitute Vinicius de Melo pounced for an 89th minute equaliser for Le Mans at Valenciennes, who had gone in front on 40 minutes through Sebastien Roudet.
