French champions Lyon left it late against lowly Valenciennes but still did enough to scrape a 2-1 success at Stade de Gerland.
Lyon lost their first match of the season last weekend in a falling to a defeat against Rennes and again, on Friday, they were less than convincing.
Valenciennes have picked up just a solitary point from their last six away games but still had the temerity to take the lead when the talented Steve Savidan struck in the 75th minute.
Lyon, though, responded strongly and with five minutes left garnered a leveller from the head of Brazilian defender Cris.
Then, mere moments later, fellow defender Sebastien Squillaci grabbed a dramatic winner with an acrobatic effort that defied his defensive status.
