Milan defender Jaap Stam will miss Wednesday's UEFA Champion's League quarter final against Lyon after failing to recover from a calf problem.

The Dutchman had hoped to be fit for the away leg of the tie but has not been named in Milan's travelling party.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti is without a number of key players. With Brazilian Cafu still sidelined, and captain Paolo Maldini still not ready to start, Ancelotti is running out of defensive options.

The injuries could pave the way for Alessandro Costacurta to play at right-back.

The 39-year-old turned in an impressive display in Saturday's 3-1 Serie A win over Fiorentina, and Ancelotti insists he will check on the veteran's fitness before deciding his starting line up.

"If Costacurta is in good shape, then I will turn to him," Ancelotti said, who was also confident his team would get a positive result in Lyon.

"The team are in one of their best periods of form and when things are like that we always manage to get a result."
