Abidal blow for Lyon

Lyon will start the season without Eric Abidal after he broke bone in his foot.

Lyon will have to start the season without Eric Abidal after he broke a bone in his foot in a pre-season friendly.

The French defender picked up the injury playing against Once Caldas in the recent Peace Cup tournament in Korea.

It has been discovered that the 26-year-old has broken a metatarsal bone in his foot and could be out of action for up to 12 weeks.

The news will be a huge blow for the French champions as the influential stopper will also miss the start of their UEFA Champions League campaign.

New Lyon boss Gerard Houllier may decide to enter the transfer market for some quality cover for Abidal, who is a major presence in their rearguard.

It is also a big blow for Abidal, but he hopes to return to action sooner rather than later.

"I hope to recover faster," said Abidal.

"I had injuries last season and came back okay. I have no worries about that."
