Lyon pinched some ground back on Monaco after running out 3-0 winners over Montpellier on Saturday.

Monaco were forced to settle for a point from their trip to Bastia, which handed the likes of Lyon and Paris Saint Germain the chance to close the gap.

PSG had to settle for a 0-0 home draw against Metz but Lyon made no mistake, with Vikash Dhorasoo handing them the lead on nine minutes.

The goal owed much to the skills of Eric Carriere who carved open Montpellier before laying the ball into the path of Dhorasoo and he applied the finish.

Pegguy Luyindula put the game beyond Montpellier on 35 minutes when converting from Anthony Reveillere's cross.

Montpellier disintegrated late in the game, with Nenad Dzodic being sent off in the same minute as Julian Viale added a third.

Auxerre continue to impress and goals in each half by Olivier Kapo and Djibril Cisse handed them victory at Strasbourg.

Alexander Frei scored twice as Rennes dented Sochaux's unlikely title push. Maxence Flachez put through his own net as Sochaux wilted.

Swedish star Kim Kallstrom is tipped for greatness and he scored the fourth on 85 minutes to seal a fine day for Rennes.

Nantes thumped Ajaccio and will look to use the win as a springboard for a European push.

Marama Vahirua and Mathieu Berson scored two early goals to take the game beyond the visitors who collapsed late on as Viorel Moldovan and Shiva N'Zigou added to the scoreline.

Guingamp remain in the bottom three after defeat at Bordeaux. Pablo Francia and Sylvain Franco did the damage for Les Girondins.

The bottom two teams at the start of the day boosted their survival hopes as Toulouse won at Lille and Le Mans proved too strong for Nice.

Cedric Faure netted for Toulouse while Daniel Cousin's effort shortly before the break secured a vital three points for Le Mans.
