Eric Carriere rescued a point for title holders Lyon in their tense tussle at home to Paris Saint Germain.

The visitors had an early penalty appeal dismissed when Pauleta fell under the combined challenge of Lyon defenders Edmilson and Jeremie Berthod.

On ten minutes, Lyon forced a superb save out of PSG goalkeeper Jerome Alonzo when Juninho's far post header was miraculously kept out.

PSG then launched an attack with Jose Pierre-Fanfan teeing up Pauleta but the Portuguese hit-man fired his shot over the crossbar.

The deadlock was broken on 40 minutes when Gabriel Heinze and Modeste M'Bami linked up to present Pauleta with the chance to fire past Gregory Coupet.

The reigning champions dominated the second half with Alonzo saving well from Berthod and Giovane Elber failing to find the target.

But Lyon grabbed the goal their pressure deserved with six minutes remaining when Elber and Pegguy Luyindula contrived to tee up substitute Carriere to slot home from 12 yards out.

In the dying moments, a rasping Vikash Dhorasoo shot whistled over the bar but, ultimately, this point only serves to aid league leaders Monaco's championship quest.
