Both Monaco and Lyon registered victories on Friday night to maintain their positions at the top of Le Championnat.

League leaders Monaco produced an excellent away display to beat Marseille 2-1.

The hosts had gone in front when Mido fired in shortly before the break but the side from the principality fought back to level through Sebastien Squillachi on 64.

Ludovic Giuly then scored a sensational winner just a minute later to maintain Monaco's six point lead over nearest rivals Lyon.

Marseille have now fallen 12 points off the pace and were booed off the pitch at the end of the game.

Lyon warmed up for the Uefa Champions League clash with Celtic by defeating Metz 2-1.

Paul Le Guen's team managed to clinch victory after falling behind to a goal from Jonathan Jager on 21 minutes.

However, Metz were unable to hang onto their lead for long as Pegguy Luyindula levelled matters just five minutes later with his eighth goal of the season.

The defending champions then went in front after the break when Brazilian defender Edmilson headed home from a corner on 47 minutes.

Lyon then squandered several chances to extend their lead but managed to hang on for the home victory.
