Brazilian striker Brandao has been jailed and fined 20,000 euros (£15,850) for headbutting Paris Saint-Germain's Thiago Motta.
The Bastia forward will serve a month behind bars but the President of the Paris court suggested he could benefit from a reduced sentence and not a prison stay.
French prosecutors had requested an eight-month suspended term and 15,000 euros fine against Brandao, who headbutted Motta after a Ligue 1 game on August 16.
CCTV cameras at the Parc des Princes showed Brandao attacking Italian midfielder Motta and then fleeing to the Bastia changing room, leaving his victim with a broken nose.
The 34-year-old claimed he had been insulted by Motta throughout the 2-0 defeat over a rape charge he was cleared of in 2012.
He denied it was premeditated, claiming he had wanted to "have it out with Motta and then blew a fuse".
The prosecutor had earlier described the player's actions as calculated, arguing that a threat of violence had been made earlier in the evening.
"On the pitch he (Brandao) said he'd be waiting for me afterwards, but I never thought he'd actually do it," Motta told the police.
Brandao was banned from playing for six months following the incident and is set to return in February.
