Sky Sports sources understand that Newcastle have lodged a bid for Bordeaux forward Yoan Gouffran.
The 26-year-old, who can play as a striker or winger, has just six months left on his current deal at the Stade Chaban Delmas.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is known to be keen and has been strongly linked with the former France Under-21 international.
However, Newcastle have now come in and lodged a bid of around €750,000 (£628,000) for Gouffran.
It is believed Bordeaux want more for the player, and reports claim the bid has been rejected.
