Marseille desperate for playmaker to stay

Marseille chairman Vincent Labrune admits to having spoken to Mathieu Valbuena's agent in an effort to clear up any uncertainty regarding his future. Speculation continues to suggest that the France international could soon be on his way out of Stade Velodrome. His failure to hold down a regular role domestically, coupled with a dip in form, saw him overlooked by national coach Laurent Blanc for a friendly double-header in November. That snub was said to have left Valubuena frustrated and weighing up his options. Marseille are, however, desperate for the talented playmaker to remain on their books, especially as his dramatic winner against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday helped to keep their UEFA Champions League dream alive.

Frustration

"On Wednesday afternoon, I spoke with his agent Christope Hutteau for about an hour," Labrune told L'Equipe. "It is not a case of whether we want him here or not. There is no question about that for me or for Didier Deschamps, who I spoke to three times yesterday. "Last summer we had financial troubles and if anyone had come with an offer for any player I would have listened. "But at the moment, sport is more important than money. "I can understand the current frustrations of Mathieu. He is an emotional player. I will talk with him on Saturday."
