Marseille have refused to rule out the prospect of Lucho Gonzalez seeing out the season at Stade Velodrome.
Such an occurrence appeared highly unlikely during pre-season, with the Argentine heavily linked with a move to Italy.
Marseille were prepared to listen to offers, but no suitable bids were received.
They are now reluctant to part with a key player with the transfer deadline looming and believe Lucho could agree to spend another 12 months in France.
Chairman Vincent Labrune told
L'Equipe: "We absolutely don't want to trap him.
"But time is passing and it will become more difficult for us to bring in a forward if Lucho were to leave.
Happy ending
"We have a good relationship with Lucho at the moment.
"It could be that this story will have a happy ending and we will spend one last season together. That is what we are hoping for."
Meanwhile, Marseille have been rocked by the news that Stephane Mbia is facing up to at least six weeks on the sidelines with a broken metatarsal.
Tests taken on Monday delivered the verdict after Mbia was injured in final minute of their 2-2 draw with Auxerre on Sunday.
The Cameroon international was found to have fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot.
