Lyon confident coach will still be at the helm in 2011/12

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is confident coach Claude Puel will still be in charge next season. There have been rumours of unrest emanating out of Stade Gerland for some time, with it reported that coach and chairman do not see eye to eye. A slow start to the 2010/11 campaign saw pressure mount on Puel, with his future regularly called into question. He has, however, been able to haul Lyon back into the Ligue 1 title race and into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Aulas admits there is no guarantee that the current regime will remain in place past the end of the season, but he has no plans to implement changes.

Experience

"Could I imagine extending the contract of Claude Puel past 2012? No," Aulas told L'Equipe. "Is there a 100 per cent chance he will remain here next season? No. But it is probably 95 per cent certain. "We have a good relationship. There are not many coaches around that have his experience and ability." Meanwhile, Lyon's title hopes have been dealt a blow by the news that experienced defender Cris has suffered another injury setback. The Brazilian has been plagued by thigh problems this season and is now nursing a back complaint. Medical reports suggest he has strained a muscle and is likely to be sidelined for the foreseeable future.
