Lille kept their faint title hopes alive with a 2-1 win at Le Mans, while there were other victories for Lorient, Nice and Boulogne.
Lille had taken the lead at Stade Leon Bollee through Vinicius De Melo on 13 minutes, but home side Le Mans equalised after half-time through Modibo Maiga.
However, a penalty from Yohan Cabaye puts Lille up to third in the table and leaves Le Mans eight points off safety in the relegation zone.
Lille jump above Montpellier, who could only manage a 0-0 draw at Nancy.
Neither side could break the deadlock at Stade Marcel-Picot, but Montpellier stay in the race for that final UEFA Champions League place.
Boulogne managed a shock 3-0 win away against Sochaux, although their survival hopes still hang by a thread.
The goals came from Gregory Thil, Jeremy Blayac and Mustapha Yatabare as Jacques Faty was sent off for the home side.
Bordeaux's slump continued as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Lorient.
The French champions are now nine points off leaders Marseille with five games left to play, as Kevin Gameiro's goal left Lorient just four points off Les Girondins.
Already-relegated Grenoble were beaten 2-1 at Nice, despite taking the lead in the first-half.
Nassim Akrour opened the scoring but Nice mounted a comeback and sealed the three points thanks to Eric Mouloungui and Emerse Fae.
Meanwhile, Paris St Germain and Rennes could not be separated at Parc des Princes, the game ending in a 1-1 stalemate.
Jerome Leroy netted the first just after the half-hour mark for the away side but Guillaume Hoarau equalised for PSG after the break.
