French midfielder to call it quits next summer

Paris St Germain midfielder Claude Makelele has confirmed that he will retire at the end of the 2009/10 season. The 36-year-old joined PSG in the summer of 2008 after a spell with Premier League side Chelsea but he has now decided that the new campaign will be his last. Former France star Makelele, who also spent a successful stint at Real Madrid, insists that even if PSG qualify for the UEFA Champions League he will not continue. He said in L'Equipe: "We have players like Jeremy Clement and Clement Chantome, who can be surprises in midfield this season. "They will slowly force me out of the team. In one year, I will end my career. That is for sure, even if we qualify for the Champions League." Makelele signed a new deal with PSG in July which tied him to the club until the summer of 2010. PSG begin their Ligue 1 campaign with a trip to Montpellier on Saturday evening.
