Claude Makelele will be playing on for another year at Paris Saint Germain.
The 36-year-old former Chelsea and Real Madrid star was considering his options.
However, PSG supremo Sebastien Bazin has promised Makelele that he will be involved next term.
PSG are yet to confirm who their new coach is after Paul Le Guen was told he would not be getting his contract renewed.
Valenciennes boss and former PSG player Antoine Kombouare is favourite to take charge at the Parc des Princes.
"I'm staying because chairman Sebastien Bazin assured me the future coach was relying on me," the 36-year-old said in L'Equipe.
"I shall probably stay on the pitch for one more year."
Makelele confirmed that he would like to work for the club in the future, possibly as a scout.
"Afterwards, I would like to work for the club, at the disposal of the chairman, the manager and the coach," he said.
"I'm interested in recruiting and I think my network, my charisma and my credit as a player could help the club."
