Karim Benzema's future at Lyon depends on how they progress in the Champions League this term.

Lyon ace to see how team progress in the Champions League

Karim Benzema has revealed how Lyon's progress in the UEFA Champions League this term will dictate whether he stays at the club next season. Benzema, who only penned a new long-term contract at Stade de Gerland as recently as last month, has a number of European giants eyeing a move for his services. The 21-year-old is set to lead the line against Barcelona in Tuesday's last 16 first leg clash of Europe's prestigious club competition. Lyon were eliminated by the Catalan giants last season and the France international will be unhappy if the French champions fail to reach the quarter-finals this term. "I'm fine at Lyon, I've spoken with the chairman and the coach," he told L'Equipe. "I just want to go as far as possible in the Champions League.

Satisfied

"I won't be satisfied if we are again eliminated before the quarter-finals. "What will happen against Lithuania with the French national side may also play a part. People say it is dangerous to leave before a World Cup year. The problem is not leaving, but to play. "My departure? Firstly, you have to know my chairman won't let me leave! My decision depends on the Champions League and French side indeed." Meanwhile, chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is fuming with want-away striker Fred, who has been suspended, for demanding they pay-out the remainder of his contract. The Brazilian striker is duo to join Fluminese in the coming weeks, although the marksman has refused to leave unless he is paid the rest of his lucrative deal. "I am both disappointed and upset," said Aulas. "What he's doing to his team-mates and the club, it's unbelievable."
