Fernando Cavenaghi's second-half goal saw Bordeaux secure a 1-0 win over St Etienne that takes them to within three points of Lyon.
Champions and league leaders Lyon remain favourites to reclaim their Ligue 1 crown but Bordeaux have hinted this season that their challenge could go the distance.
Laurent Blanc's side were made to work hard for a three-point haul against midtable St Etienne but after the interval, in the 56th minute, the majority of those present at Stade Chaban-Delmas were able to breath a sigh of relief when Cavenaghi broke the deadlock.
Bordeaux are now five points clear of third placed Nancy, while St Etienne remain in 13th.
