Valenciennes climbed to second spot with a 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten Lorient.
In a battle between two of the surprise packages of Ligue 1, it was Valenciennes who struck the first blow as Gregory Pujol scored in the 27th minute.
Pujol grabbed his second of the night 12 minutes later, before Sylvain Marchal trimmed Valenciennes' lead after 43 minutes.
Lorient put pressure on the visitors after half-time and Rafik Saifi missed a penalty, before Sebastien Roudet clinched the points for Valenciennes in the 89th minute.
The result leaves Valenciennes level on points with leaders Nancy, while Lorient are two points further back in third.
