Scottish League Cup: Partick defeat 'awful' says St Mirren boss Tommy Craig

St Mirren manager Tommy Craig slammed his side following their "awful" 1-0 League Cup defeat by Partick Thistle.

Both sides squandered opportunities after an uneventful first half and Thistle won the third-round tie 10 minutes into extra-time when Nathan Eccleston tapped home after fellow substitute Christie Elliott had a shot saved.

Craig, who was without the ill John McGinn and Jason Naismith, said: "I thought it was really, really poor in quality. I think it's fair to say that neither team deserved it and it looked as though it was going to go to penalties.

"I'm disappointed with my lads. It was a flat performance lacking in opportunities, for both teams.

"I'm really disappointed because you look forward to coming here in the cup, it's usually vibrant, but it was just flat.

"I don't think either team was in control of the game. You guys and certainly myself would be looking at it and thinking 'what kind of spectacle is this?' I thought it was awful.

"It's one of those games I was sitting there thinking to myself: 'This is not football, I'm not enjoying this and I'm sure the punters aren't enjoying it either.'"

Thistle boss Alan Archibald was just pleased to see his team progress.

"I thought we started well enough but the game just went flat," he said. "The second half was a bit brighter. We created a number of opportunities around their box and squandered them.

"Christie gave us a right lift when he came on, and he was really positive and had a shot at goal, and Nathan is there to tap it in."
