Gary Harkins' contract with St Mirren has been terminated by mutual consent.
The midfielder signed a two-year deal when joining from Dundee a year ago but he was loaned to Oldham in January after then-manager Danny Lennon criticised his work-rate.
The 29-year-old struck five times for the Latics and boss Lee Johnson, who played with Harkins at Kilmarnock, expressed an interest in taking him to Boundary Park on a permanent deal.
A St Mirren statement said: "We thank Gary for his efforts for St Mirren FC and everyone at the club would like to wish him all the best in the future."
