Stuart McCall would love to see Motherwell caretaker boss Kenny Black be given the job on a permanent basis.
Black is in temporary charge at Fir Park following McCall’s resignation on Sunday and will lead the team into their home game against Dundee United on Friday night.
The Motherwell job has already attracted substantial interest, with general manager Alan Burrows confirming the club had received 10 applications within an hour of McCall’s departure.
But the outgoing boss feels Black would be the ideal candidate to take control of a team second bottom in the Scottish Premiership.
"He certainly would be a good successor to me," McCall told Sky Sports News HQ.
“Nothing would give me greater pleasure than for Motherwell to beat Dundee United tonight and then to take it from there,” he said.
“Kenny was my best signing as a manager and a victory tonight would do him no harm, that’s for sure.
“He’s not only a terrific coach, he’s also a smashing guy and he is capable. He has the respect of all of the players and all of the staff.”
McCall, who previously managed Bradford City, will not make any quick decisions about his future and feels he has a good track record, having led Motherwell to three consecutive top-three finishes in the Scottish top flight.
But he maintains the time was right to call time on his career at Fir Park.
“It wasn’t until I woke up on the Sunday morning and started thinking about the formation and the team selection that I thought, I’ve been there four years, maybe it’s time for a change,” he said.
“Hopefully it will help the club out if they bring in a new voice who can get that confidence up and take it on. It was time for me to step aside.
“I’ve had a cracking go at it and it was time for a change. When you get a defeat it stays with you until the next game but when you win, you start thinking about your next game and you don’t get time to enjoy it.
“Motherwell is a great club to work for and finishing second last season was an achievement I will never forget.”
