Inverness manager John Hughes credited a second-half improvement for the 2-0 win over Hamilton at New Douglas Park.

The visitors needed an own goal from Grant Gillespie to break the deadlock before making the game safe through Nick Ross' second and Hughes admitted his side had ridden their luck in the first half.

He said: "I thought Hamilton had the better of the first half and we didn't show the tempo we had in midweek.

"Hamilton have had great energy this season, and with Martin Canning getting the job we didn't want to get caught up in it. They were better for the first 30 minutes, without really threatening.

"Once we got in at half-time and changed the shape and tactics, I thought we were much better.

"We got a break with the first goal, but got a good second and their 'keeper has had some great saves. Michael McGovern and Billy McKay have had a bit of a ding-dong from being in the Irish squad together, but the 'keeper has come out on top today.

"The only dampener on the day was the injury to our keeper Den Brill, who has been outstanding for us but has fallen awkwardly and twisted his knee."

Martin Canning was disappointed to begin his reign as Hamilton's permanent player-manager with a defeat, adding: "I thought we played well in the first half and Inverness have not had any chances.

The first goal is crucial at this level and it was a bit freakish. Our keeper has made the save and then it hits our defender in the chest and goes in.

"Losing four games is new to me and the players, so we need to get out of this habit quickly and get back to our winning ways."
