Inverness have given Barnsley permission to speak to Terry Butcher about the managerial vacancy at Oakwell.
Barnsley sacked boss Keith Hill in December after a poor run of results and the Tykes are currently bottom of the Championship.
Butcher has guided Inverness into second place in the SPL behind Celtic, and Inverness chairman Kenny Cameron said he is not surprised his manager is being courted.
Cameron confirmed: "We have given Barnsley FC permission to speak to Terry.
"Given our current position in the SPL and the fact we have a cup semi-final on the horizon it is inevitable that if any managerial positions come up our management team will no doubt be on the radar.
"We will be doing everything possible to ensure that Terry remains with the club and finishes what has been an incredible journey to date for us all."
Barnsley confirmed: "The Board will be looking to meet with Terry Butcher in the next 48 hours to discuss the position of first team manager."
