Dundee United have appealed the red card shown to Ryan McGowan during Wednesday's 4-0 defeat against Celtic.

The full-back was dismissed in the dying minutes of the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay at Celtic Park following a challenge on home substitute Liam Henderson, a tackle later described by Celtic boss Ronny Deila as “stupid”.

A statement on the Tannadice club’s website read: "Dundee United confirms that it has submitted an appeal to the Scottish FA relating to the dismissal for serious foul play of defender Ryan McGowan during the William Hill Scottish Cup quarter final replay versus Celtic on Wednesday."

The former Hearts player is free to play at Celtic Park on Saturday as the teams meet for the fourth time in 14 days.

Celtic progressed to the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup following a 1-1 draw at Tannadice, and Deila’s team won the League Cup final between the teams 2-0 on Sunday.

Six players have been dismissed in the previous three games going into the league match at Celtic Park.

United midfielder Paul Paton was wrongly dismissed along with Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk in the first match and had their red cards overturned on appeal.

Paul Dixon was also sent off for deliberate handball on the goal-line in that game, while fellow United defender Sean Dillon was given a straight red card at Hampden for a tackle on Emilio Izaguirre.

And shortly before McGowan’s red card, Anthony Stokes was dismissed for retaliation on Paton following an incident which left the Celtic striker with a bloodied nose.

The figure could have been higher with United striker Nadir Ciftci winning an appeal after being cited for kicking Scott Brown at Tannadice.
