Both sides were desperate for points going into the third derby match of the season but they had to settle for a share of the spoils in a lively encounter.
The away side had looked good to grab a victory at half time as goals from Steve Lovell on 18 and Steven Milne six minutes before the break had given them a healthy advantage.
But The Dark Blues were unable to withstand a second half fightback from the hosts and Dodds managed to cut the deficit in half with a strike just 11 minutes after the interval.
The veteran striker then sent the home fans home happy when he converted a penalty with five minutes to go after he had been knocked to the ground by Mark Fotheringham.
However that was not the end of the drama as players from both sides got involved in a late melee that saw only Fotheringham go into the referee's notebook.
The result keeps alive the home side's chances of claiming a top-six finish before the SPL season splits into two sections, a position that would mean the two teams would not meet again this term.
