Dundee United have suffered a blow with the news that Scott Paterson will be out of action for at least a month with a knee ligament injury.

The summer signing from Partick Thistle has been out of action since mid-August and has made just two appearances for his new club.

Tests have shown that he needs to go under the knife to clear up the problem and United boss Ian McCall bemoaned his bad luck to lose Paterson.

"Every team I've managed has had a sweeper, and we brought Scott here to fill that role," said McCall.

"Unfortunately, after playing well against Hibs, he lasted only ten minutes at Parkhead and hasn't played since.

"To discover he'll be out even longer is a real blow, and Scott himself is on a bit of a downer. But hopefully he'll come back from this better than ever."
