Falkirk beat Brechin City 2-1 at the Falkirk Stadium to reach the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Captain David McCracken put the Bairns in front against their League One opponents after 11 minutes when he met Blair Alston's corner and headed firmly past the 'keeper.

Falkirk striker Taylor Morgan then thought he had put his side two up after he beat the 'keeper with a chip but he watched as the ball struck the post and bounced clear.

Brechin stated to cause real problems after the restart and Bobby Barr could have equalised when he went close with a well-hit low drive.

And the visitors finally found a way back into the game when Gerry McLauchlan was fouled by Alston inside the area and Alan Trouten (55) stepped up to slot home from the penalty spot.

The Bairns went close when David Smith’s cross was met by Morgan but he was denied by the woodwork for the second time when his glancing header hit the bar with the goalkeeper well beaten.

Falkirk kept pressing and were rewarded for their efforts when Smith struck from close range to put his team 2-1 in front with just 10 minutes remaining.

Falkirk's Tom Taiwo had an effort blocked before there was drama in stoppage-time when Robert Thomson and Kieran Duffie collided in the box. The referee appeared to point at the penalty spot before booking the City man for diving.

Elsewhere, Ally MacKinnon struck in added-time to give Lowland League Spartans a Scottish Cup replay following 1 1-1 draw against Berwick Rangers who had lead through a first-half goal from Paul Willis.
