Christophe Berra has signed a new five-year deal at Hearts after concurring on personal terms with head coach Valdas Ivanauskas.
With Hearts still reeling from Andy Webster's likely ill-timed departure ahead of the new campaign, news of Berra's decision to commit long-term will come as a real relief.
Ivanauskas is confident the 21-year-old has all the attributes to fill the considerable void left by Webster, having spoken with enthusiasm about the Tynecastle outfit's decision to tie both Berra and 18-year-old striker Jamie Mole to long-term deals.
''We had some good news today, Christophe and Jamie have signed five-year deals,'' said Ivanauskas.
''I'm happy, Christophe did well last season. We had many players in his position and he did not play regularly but he has the chance this year.
''He is good enough to replace Andy now. He played in some hard games and pressure games last season and he played well in pre-season.
''He is ready for the big games and he has a big future if he works hard.''
