SCOTLAND coach Berti Vogts has given high praise to Hearts defender Andy Webster by hailing him as one of the best young players in Europe.

The national boss saw Webster in action as he helped The Jambos to a 2-1 victory over Dundee United at the weekend.

Webster inspired the Edinburgh side to victory in the absence of skipper Steven Pressley and scored his first goal of the season to level the scores at 1-1.

The former Arbroath stopper caught the eye of Vogts who also called the 20-year-old into his squad for the recent Euro 2004 qualifying defeat to Lithuania, and says the starlet will have a big part to play for his country.

"I thought Andy Webster was the outstanding player on the pitch on Saturday.

"He had a great match and managed to score his first goal of the season.

"We have some friendlies coming up for Scotland and I am sure there are going to be many good opportunities for Andy.

"Not only is he a good lad but he has excellent character and always works hard in training.

"The future is bright for him."
